Concussion Awareness and Optional Baseline Testing

Posted by Langley Thunder Lacrosse on Mar 05 2017 at 01:16PM PST

Concussions and other brain injuries can be serious and potentially life threatening. If managed properly, most athletes can enjoy long careers in sports after a concussion. Research indicates that these injuries can also have serious consequences later in life if not managed properly.

A concussion occurs when there is a direct or indirect injury to the brain. As a result, transient impairment of mental functions such as memory, balance/equilibrium, and vision may occur. It is important to recognize that many sport-related concussions do not result in loss of consciousness and, therefore, all suspected head injuries should be taken seriously.

Coaches, parents and fellow teammates can be helpful in identifying those who may potentially have a concussion, because a concussed athlete may not be aware of his or her condition or may be trying to hide the injury to stay in the game or practice.

For those players/families who are interested, All Round Fitness and Wellness Centre in Langley is offering Baseline Concussion Testing for Langley Thunder Minor Lacrosse Athletes.

A baseline test is a test for healthy athletes, which is completed once per year. This battery of tests including balance, reaction time, strength, memory, concentration, visual tracking, processing speed, and a number of other areas, provides doctors and clinicians with an indication of how your brain works when healthy. In the event of a concussion, athletes are re-tested and compared to their baseline results in order to make a proper diagnosis as well as safe return to play decisions.

A concussion is an injury to the brain that, if not dealt with appropriately, can lead to long-lasting brain damage and other serious complications. The most serious complications result from returning to play too soon. Baseline testing takes the guesswork out and provides doctors and clinicians with a more accurate determination of brain recovery following injury.

All-Round Fitness and Wellness Centre is now a Complete Concussion Management™ facility, meaning that all baseline test results are stored electronically and can be accessed in the event of injury by any one of 150 Complete Concussion Management treatment centres in Canada. This year Complete Concussion Management Inc. is also releasing it’s athlete smartphone application, which will allow you to view and compare your baseline test results with everyone your age across Canada.
